Traffic building is no different than the more traditional sciences we are all familiar with – chemistry, physics, etc. Since the Internet is an interactive medium, traffic building specialists can perform “experiments” and gather empirical evidence as to what works, and what doesn’t. So just what are the basic principles of traffic building?
1. 99% of your visitors will probably never return.
Don’t worry, this is not a bad thing. There are millions of people surfing the web, you only want a few of them to stop by your site each day.
2. Interesting content will be read.
Make sure there is something worthwhile for them to stay for. You need to keep their attention long enough to get them to do whatever it is you goal is (e.g. sign up for newsletter, buy something, etc.).
3. A well-placed link will be clicked.
A list of links is an online version of roulette. Well place links say “I know what you are looking for, click and you’ll get it.” Do the work for your visitors and they’ll click for you.
4. Compelling banners will be clicked.
Putting all the flashing gimmicks aside (they’re useless by the way), a simple message that demonstrates there is value on the other side will get people’s attention.
5. The fastest way to make a sale is to let an expert do it for you.
Unless you are full of charisma, let someone else make the sale. Just stand there silently and point in the right direction.
The real challenge is to learn how to build upon these simple principles to harvest real value from your web initiatives. On the Internet everything can be measured, and therefore, everything can be assigned value.
