What exactly do we mean by the VALUE of a web visit?

by Traffic Building Faculty

“On the Internet everything can be measured, and therefore, everything can be assigned value.”

It is important to recognize that there is a significant difference between value and revenue. Revenue is a form of value that can be converted into currency or used as currency when making a purchase (e.g. gift certificate). There are many other forms of value, but for the purpose of traffic building we are only concerned with the value of a page visit.

When someone visits one of your pages you have earned a credit, albeit a small one. The challenge is how to gather all of these credits and convert them into revenue. Sounds easy, but it’s not. This is the process of converting a potential customer into making a purchase. It’s the single most important factor that distinguishes businesses around the world.

Revenue goals are unique to each program, so we cannot tell you exactly what to do. Suffice it to say, “invest” your credits wisely. Use some to drive more traffic to your site; some to cover your expenses. Look for programs that offer bonuses, either for using their service or referring new clients.

In one example, a student of ours found a way to sell credits in a general banner exchange and used the money to purchase some targeted advertising. Another student got all of his friends to willingly surf on his behalf by setting their browser defaults.

So just how do you develop a web site that can produce more value than it costs? For centuries there have been men whose quests have been to develop a machine that produces more energy than it consumes – a perpetual motion machine. Our concept for a web site is quite similar.
